If your pallets arrive with scuffed cartons or leaning stacks, the issue is usually not the forklift. It is containment. Good containment keeps cartons locked to each other and to the pallet with the least film possible.
Why loads shift
Most shifting comes back to three basics: film that is too thick or too brittle for your corners, not enough stretch to create elastic recovery, or a pattern that fails to anchor the load at the bottom and cap it at the top. Fix those three elements and you solve the majority of in-transit issues without throwing more plastic at the problem.
Film gauge made easy
Gauge is a measure of film thickness. Thicker is not always better. Modern “high-performance” films use stronger resin blends so you can drop gauge and still get durability.

For manual wrapping, many teams use 80–90 ga because it “feels safe.” With good film, you can often step down to 60–70 ga and still gain containment.

On machines, a 50–60 ga high-performance film can outperform older 80–90 ga films once you dial in stretch and pattern.

Watch corners and sharp edges. If you see nicks or zipper tears, do not jump straight to heavy film. First try corner guards or a slightly tougher film grade at the same gauge.
Pre-stretch is your best lever
Pre-stretch is how much the machine stretches film before it touches the load. At 200% pre-stretch, one foot of film becomes three feet on the pallet. That elastic recovery is what squeezes cartons together and keeps them put. Powered pre-stretch carriages in the 180–250% range deliver consistent containment while cutting film per pallet. Core-brake systems and hand wrapping can work at low volume, but they are inconsistent by nature.
A simple way to tune pre-stretch is to raise it until you see thinning or edge snap on corners, then back off a touch. You want the film to “want” to pull back without tearing.
Wrap patterns that work
Think of three goals: tie-down, sidewall, and top cap.

Tie-down: Start with 2–3 wraps that catch the pallet deck boards. This locks the load to the base so it cannot walk.

Sidewall: Move up the load with a 50% overlap, keeping even spacing. Add a slow extra pass at the middle “belly” where most bulging starts.

Top cap: Finish with 2–3 wraps across the top third to prevent splaying. For mixed or unstable tops, add an “X” band or top sheet and capture its edges.

Roping for reinforcement: Twist the film into a rope for one pass around the middle if you need a quick band without adding full layers.

Avoid bullseyes: Do not leave open holes at the corners or top. Gaps invite carton creep.
How to check containment without a lab
You can validate changes with quick floor tests. A firm push on the sidewall should deflect the film and spring back rather than slump. A careful tilt with a pallet jack should move the whole stack as one, not let the top layer skate. Track one week of data after each adjustment: damages per 100 pallets, rewraps, and rolls consumed. If damages fall while film use stays flat or declines, you are moving in the right direction.
Hand wrap or machine wrap?
Hand wrap is fine for small, square loads and sporadic pallets. Once operators spend minutes per pallet or you manage mixed heights and frequent changeovers, a basic powered pre-stretch machine typically pays for itself through film savings and consistency. If you already own a turntable wrapper, ask about upgraded carriages or recipe controls before you consider a full replacement.
